Celebrating The Best Of British
As Wimbledon gets ready to take centre stage within this summer’s best of British sporting events, we showcase a selection of our great British skincare brands: Emma Hardie, Medik8 and The Organic Pharmacy.
Our British Skincare Brands
There are lots of things – big and small – that Britain does brilliantly. Fish and chips. The NHS. Pub quizzes. Stately homes. Music festivals. Cups of tea. Throughout summer especially, we’re known for our marquee sports and cultural events, incorporating everything from cricket at Lord’s to racing at Goodwood. And then of course, there’s Wimbledon. The oldest tennis championship in the world – and widely considered to be the most prestigious – there’s nothing anywhere else quite like it. What takes place in that famous SW19 postcode embodies the very best of British values, on so many levels. In turn, that’s inspired us to showcase three of our very own best of British skincare brands: Emma Hardie, Medik8, and The Organic Pharmacy.
Founded in 2009 by pioneering holistic facialist Emma Hardie, this award-winning British brand uses power-packed botanicals to create sustainable, cruelty-free products that help its customers look younger, naturally. The brand began with a small but perfectly formed capsule collection called Amazing Face. That has since evolved into a comprehensive range of products, renowned for their integrity and efficacy, that are suitable for all ages, skin types and concerns. Importantly, what stays out of Emma Hardie’s formulations is just as important as what goes into them. The entire product range is formulated without potential skin-sensitising ingredients such as parabens, mineral oils, synthetic colours or fragrances.
As you’d expect from a brand built on such strong holistic principles, there’s a serious commitment to sustainability, corporate responsibility, and ethical business practices. Emma Hardie’s skincare range isn’t tested on animals, and almost all of its products are vegan. All of its packaging is FSC-approved, and (with the exception of its Protect & Prime SPF30) is 100% recyclable.
The best bit about Emma Hardie skincare? The products really work! There’s certainly no shortage of celebrity fans to tell you that (think Jenna Coleman, Poppy Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Rosie Fortescue). This great British skincare brand harnesses all the expertise of its world-renowned facialist founder, to offer you holistic, high-performance products that visibly repair, nourish and rejuvenate.
Medik8 is another great British skincare success story. Created by Elliott Isaacs, the brand began life in the back the biochemistry graduate’s dad’s pharmacy. From these humble origins, Medik8 has evolved into a world-renowned cosmeceutical brand. It offers professional-grade anti-ageing products designed to help its customers achieve ‘beautiful skin for life’. Its extensive product portfolio is inspired by its simple, streamlined CSA philosophy, which advocates Vitamin C plus sunscreen by day, followed by Vitamin A by night.
Medik8 is all about simple routines that really work. But what sets it apart from certain other cosmeceutical brands is that there’s no need to choose between results and a luxury experience. This innovative brand manages to combine high-strength actives and clinically proven ingredients with sensorial textures and fragrances – plus gorgeous packaging – so consumers really can enjoy the best of both worlds.
Like fellow Brit brand Emma Hardie, Medik8 has a clear commitment to environmental sustainability, recycling, green chemistry and renewable energy. The brand is cruelty-free. And since July 2019, every single product manufactured by Medik8 is 100% vegan-friendly.
The Organic Pharmacy
The original Organic Pharmacy store opened on the King’s Road in London in 2002. It was subsequently joined by outlets in Kensington, Hampstead and Marylebone, followed by a number of select retailers and spas. The brand is now available in 40 countries – but is still made in London with love, researching, formulating and manufacturing at its capital laboratory.
The Organic Pharmacy co-founder, Margo Marrone, has always advocated new ways of thinking about natural health and beauty. The brand fuses ‘nature with nurture’ to create award-winning formulations that combine herbal, homeopathic and organic ingredients to deliver high-performance topical skincare and ingestibles that foster beauty and wellness from the inside out.
Many of The Organic Pharmacy’s products are vegan, and none have ever been tested on animals. Ingredients are organic where available, sustainably sourced, and of the highest pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical standard.
Nowadays, we’re all aware of the benefits of organic ingredients, but back in the early 2000s, Margo and her brand were genuine trailblazers. Twenty years later, that commitment to doing things differently continues: The Organic Pharmacy’s latest modern flagship concept in London features a juice bar, water refill station, consultation pod and florist. The best of British continues to innovate: watch this space!
